Norway 2014 – 04 Lofoten
23.08.2014 Lofoten
While having breakfast we can enjoy the surroundings, in all its beauty.
The few clouds in the sky sound promising for the weather today, and we hurry to meander between the ridges.
Typical of the National Tourist Routes roadside widget - this one is specifically there to keep your testament, while your drooping chin prevents your brain from thinking.
Once again a bridge, again with the strangely steep and curved and plan-shaped form that dominates engineering thought in this part of Norway; I wondered for a long time - ok, they are steep so that ships can pass below, but why are they curved in plan? My only logical explanation is related to the fact that as they are so steep - you can't see if another vehicle is climbing against you on the other side, and they are not very wide - here we are just crossing the "ridge" of the bridge:
… And the left end of the photo above, slightly zoomed in - not that it will help much to recreate the sense of scale - but it is something.
Another observation parking lot on the road; this also is quite useful for lunch break, we checked it out.
Here is the view ...
We take the road and stop again at the Viking Museet - Lofoten
The reconstruction of the found Great Viking House from the 9th century never entered my lens, but several ships, together with my personal Viking-wannabe, did not escape me:
And these sympathizers, apparently local, were walking back and forth around the fjord with one of the reconstructions…
Special greetings to all my friends - acting firefighters with the nice exit sign, which was equipped with the museum…
And the only picture inside the museum - my mercy and the floor-standing Midgard Serpent, or Jörmungandr - the huge snake that has embraced the three Viking worlds in its arms, that it has finally bitten its tail…
To Ragnarok, the serpent in question will come out of the world's waters and, after poisoning the sky, will be killed by Thor, shortly before Thor himself falls, killed by his venom.
In fact, the lord of this particular house loaded his entire household on one or two of the upper boats, sometime in the 9th century, and went to Iceland; the whole thing just so he doesn't have to bow his head to another similar ruler trying to unite the lands of the Vikings under a common hat…
(And where should we go, eh ?! for Calypso?)
Fully barring respect for the Vikings culture, we continue to visit their former habitats.
On this beach we payed our respects to the heirs of the Vikings, 10 centuries and later:
The lady in the frame immersed herself in the icy water by running, reached the waist and stood inside for about 15 minutes…. we contented ourselves with a slight wetting of the feet; very light.
On the other side of these rocks we reach the next beach, resting in a perfect green pasture
In some places the grass-peat growed (I have no idea how) directly on the sand
I must note that the seagulls somehow always stood in the most suitable places for a photo; posing, deserts!
I would like to explicitly mention the climatic phenomenon The Sunset in these northern lands!
It has nothing to do with the beautiful red sun hiding behind Vitosha and even less is it born with the southern sunsets, which, I have heard, last a surprisingly short time…
The sun of Norway sets 4 hours!
I'm not kidding at all…
And winter does so again, only then sunrise and sunset are its only daily occurrence, when at all…
I can only guess what the same celestial light at sunrise looks like; at this time of year the long day is over, but the sun still rises much earlier and sets much later than in Bulgaria in august; and we are not one of the early birds…
But the sunset made up for our late awakenings and delighted our eyes from 20h in the evening until 00h ; and then another close to dusk…
When the sun stops illuminating the freshwater pools nestled between the cut peaks, an interesting anomaly occurs - the water was warmed during the day, the air temperature drops extremely fast, and soon comes the moment when thick water vapor slides over the waters in the shadows…
this fog flowed straight behind the ridges…
Just for information - in addition to sheep, deer, goats and cows, this animal is also seen here; which I dare not dare to name, given my very scarce pastoral knowledge :(.
Help someone !?
